Cascading Style Sheets - The Definitive Guide - 2nd Edition
Cascading Style Sheets (or CSS) are an effective and powerful means for controlling the visual presentation of webpages and websites. This book really opened my eyes to that power and to the possibilities of using CSS. If you are ever in doubt about what CSS can do, have a look at the CSS Zen Garden http://www.csszengarden.com a site that demonstrates what can be accomplished with CSS.
Cascading Style Sheets - The Definitive Guide was just what I was looking for in a CSS book. Many reference books are just that, and as such they don't 'read' well. On the other hand, many how-to type books lack quick access to information, or leave out important details. Cascading Style Sheets - The Definitive Guide is a good combination of both. It is laid out in a logical organized manner that makes finding info easy. Additionally, it builds on simple concepts to more advanced techniques, making the read reasonably interesting and not intimidating. It is also absolutely packed with useful examples, tips and 'gotcha's'.
My only criticism with the book is with the editing. On several occasions I needed to re-read sections that could have been re-written to be easier to read and understand. Obviously Meyer knows CSS inside and out, and isn't afraid to show it. However, some of the sections could have used a little more left brain.
Overall, it's well done, and I've found it quite helpful.
